Chapter 1-
Achievement Assessment and Instruction
Summary: There are many different types of assessments that can
be given in a classroom including alternative, authentic, and performance. Each
assessment is designed to help monitor student learning and achievement. In
order for the assessments to show results most effectively, the planning of
instruction must be in sync. The learning outcomes must be at the level of the
students and measured appropriately according to what was taught and how it was
taught. Its important to know if the students are ready, then they can be
monitored for progress in learning and then after, they will be assessed for
mastery. Standards are a big component to keep in mind when planning lessons
and assessments. If used correctly, assessments can positively influence
students by keeping them motivated, holding them accountable for remembering,
and helping them to understand the way they learn. Teachers must possess
knowledge in the field of assessments in order to be most effective.
Reflection: Because of how important it is to begin with the
end in mind and be mindful that the lessons match up with the appropriate assessments;
I will take more time to consider this in my own classroom. It can be very easy
to teach a lesson and think of a way to quickly monitor for learning, but I
need to be thoughtful and intentional when considering what to test the
students over. I think formative assessments are the most helpful tools to
monitor student learning, in my opinion. I will be using this type of
assessment in my classroom more often because it is less threatening and shows
visual growth.
